Director’s Notes

During film school, after creating “Behind the Mic” I was never tasked with making another documentary again by my instructors. But in the back of my mind, I yearned to complete this documentary series. So I chose to do this on my own accord and crammed it in between all of my film projects for school. I ended up filming the tentatively titled “Behind the Mic 2 and 3” at the same time.

Since this film wasn't one of my projects for school, I didn't have any time restraints or restrictions. This allowed me to tell the full story of our second act in the talent show by interviewing the majority of our group. It also made the style change a little bit from “Behind the Mic” as I was able to cut between the interviewees and have them tell the story together by finishing each other's sentences. As I began piecing the film together in 2003, I started lovingly referring to it as “The Empire Strikes Back” of the trilogy because of its similarity in tone and ending on a down note. If there was one thing I would change about this film, I would have loved to interview the remaining members of the group to add their perspective to the story.
